WordPress: Setting up PHP5 with .htaccess

As default, on my account with 1and1 hosting in the UK, PHP4 is king. If you want to use PHP5, you need to change your file suffix from ‘.php’ to ‘.php5′.

Without doing so you may get the following type of errors:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' use-google-libraries.php on line 43

OR

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ARRAY, expecting ‘)’ in /homepages/xx/xxxxxxxxx/xxxxx/xxxxxxxxxx/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/popeye/popeye.php on line 210

However, there is another way around it. A much better way. For example, if you are running an install of WordPress, many of the plugins will want to use PHP5. To fix this on your 1and1 shared hosting is simple: change the .htaccess file.

Add the following line to the top of your .htaccess file, which lives at the root of your wordpress installation:

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

And voila!

Day 2: Man flu

I’m starting to get desperate. I’ve looked through the fridge freezer and the nuts and kiwi fruit are starting look tempting. I usually eat out, but after 2 days indoors, hunger and the need to feed is overwhelming.

The ice cream is no longer quite so tempting. Having eaten 4 cartons of the stuff in recent weeks, my body probably thinks it’s poison!

It’s been windy and rainy outside, but even that is no longer daunting…

Housebound boredom is a cruel mistress!

WordPress Plugin basics: Geolocation

After seeing and article, an attack of whin has led me to geotag my posts from my iPhone :)

I’m using the WordPress iPhone app, which you can download from iTunes, and the associated plugin Geolocation, built by Chris Boyd.

It’s not a megatool, it’s very simple:

  • iPhone: adds customs geotags, longatude and latitude to your post.
  • Geolocation: reads the tags, inserts a link, and when you hover over it, you see a map

It’s nice not to have too much to think about. If you want more more power, there is always WP Geo and Geotag which are similar and allow you to create custom maps, with your own markers etc.

Gameshow Soundboard

The 2nd of Fremantle’s first foray  in to the world of iPhone apps. The first was Britain’s Got Talent, and that app went straight in to No.1 in the iTunes app store. Annoyingly, I got the other gig! However I think mine is a bit more polished! :D

This soundboard app contains some classic sound effects, theme tunes and catch phrases from Fremantle’s extensive sound library.

Grouped by show, their categories and then all together, the user gets access to the sound they want to play pretty easily.

My favourite of course, is the famous Family Fortunes, Wrong Answer buzzer.. It got almost annoying at work!

@slaggybuttonit Did you get lost? If I ended up there, I’d definately bin my iPhone GPS app…

Life choice: NZ or UK, the lowdown

So the end of my visa is coming up soon, and I need to make a choice between living in the UK, and living in NZ. A choice made difficult for 2 main reason that spring to mind:

a) I’ve come to like living in New Zealand and
b) I have a company based (on paper) in the UK.

New Zealand:

NZ is undoubtably a great country, for many reasons. The reasons that appeal to me the  most though are the following:

- Pros

  • attitude – free thinking, positive, friendly, open minded and spirited. It’s something that I’m very grateful for.
  • weather – sunny much of the year, good for S.A.D. Makes a difference when you have sun in your life until 9 in the evening most days during summer. You can’t buy that.
  • scenery - is just amazing, it touches you in a way dank cities just cant. Catching a ferry to work, to travelling to stunning location, it’s hard to do here at all.
  • microcosm – less people, but much talent. You can meet a lot of talented and/or influential people. I’ve been here a short time, and yet met more ‘top brass’ than I did in the UK. ( though I haven’t tried hard )
  • New People! – Always good to meet new people, especially with the above attitude.
  • Sport – This country is great for sports and health. People love their sports clubs.

- Cons

  • Million Miles away from the action – Europe, USA, UK. That’s the center for the english speaking world. You can’t just hop on a plane, or buy a coach ticket.
  • Visa – To live here, I need one. I’d rather set up a company than come here as a full time employee, and that means paperwork, waiting, which is all very stressful.
  • Running a Company – I have a company in the UK, do I close it down? relocate? Open an office here? Start a NZ company and bill in NZDs? What about my accountant, who I’ll probably never see again?

United Kingdom:

The UK is my home country, born and bred. So I know it well. Here’s some of the pro’s about the UK in my mind

- Pros

  • I’m in control – I know what I’m doing, how to achieve things, how to make money if I need to. I’m very familiar there
  • Money – The cash is good. I earn 40% of what I can earn in the UK
  • Friends – I have friends there that I really value.
  • Family – All my family are there, and they are people that I should really do more to spend time with. Being in NZ, makes that principle hard to follow
  • Education – If you want to learn something in the UK, you can. Head to London and you can find usergroups, clubs and allsorts for all things
  • Nightlife – Something I never took advantage of overly, but again, great bands, great nights out esp in London
  • Technology – I can get a lot of cheap gadgets, good deals etc.

- Cons

  • I hate the UK – ‘Hate’ is a strong word. But some of the following reasons reveal why
  • Negativity – Somehow the UK is always first to bring itself down. Politics and papers always report the worst, the scandals, the tragedies. People are indifferent and apathetic in general. When someone is different, they seem to want to point out all the bad things about it. Not a positive place in the majority
  • Weather – The above is not helped by the lack of sun, and when there is sun, the lack of heat. When there is heat and sun, somehow you’re either inside working, or in a city where you can barely see it.
  • My worst days – My hardest days of my life where there. While I can’t run away from myself, I can change my environment.
  • People – Linked to negativity closely; People seem distant, guarded, uninterested. I feel the same about them ( maybe it’s me ). I don’t feel open, I don’t feel relaxed, I don’t feel positive. I don’t meet people and think: ‘yeah I really like you, we could be life long friends.’ I feel I’ve met another associate.

These are just a few of my thoughts. Ok I got a bit harsh on the UK. These reason are personal and probably reflect my own character as equally as much as the country. But none-the-less, in the ultimate summary, this is how these two countries seem to affect me. Maybe I need to rethink my own qualities, but for now, this is a good exercise on identifying how I feel.

Calculating the ratio of my Portfolio items

I want to take screenshots of my work, and post them on the portfolio page of my site.

The template that I’m using is one that I found for free from smashingmagazine.com, and has such has it’s own custom way or showing my portfolio.

What I’ve quickly realised is that I need to take my screenshots at the correct ratio, or they get squashed/stretched, as opposed to just showing the top left of the image, unstretched.

Each portfolio item is required to have an image to fit in the ‘polaroid’ styled div, that is 290(w) by 230(h). This being the case, all my images need to be of the ratio 1.261:1.

To calculate the right height, I do the following:

w / r = height

example:

1024 / 1.261 = 812

Simple, but important :)

F2: most spectacular crash footage in recent years?

Not that the driver, Ricardo Teixeira would have felt that way at the time. One one hand the footage is incredible, you can see the rear view cam, then the main cam captures the car flying over the heads of the drivers slowing up for the chicane. It’s like a computer game.

On the other hand, the possible consequences, that fortunately didn’t happen are quite scary. He could have hit a wall head first, landed on another car, or 2. His car did catch fire, but it didn’t seem to take hold.

All in all, I think everyone’s glad he could walk away, just a bit confused.

F2 Ricardo Teixeira Crash > in-car cam ( forward to about 1:10 )

F2 : Ricardo Teixeira crash > track cam

Happy VAT day :)

Today I had to pay my VAT bill. Well, to be more exact, I had to pay it some time ago, but because I’m currently living in New Zealand, but registered in the UK, I have to submit and pay my UK VAT for my company still.

Anyways, for some time I thought I paid it. I paid it late, but I paid it. Some months ago I phoned up and told them my situation, and they were very helpful (very good customer service! ). They had to resend my VAT bill out to my father, who then had to wait for me to give him the details, and then he had to post to them. Long winded process!

I called again today, only to find out they never received the letter bizarrely. *gulp*

I had been in fear of fines, and even court dates in my naive imagination. However, there are very tolerant, and very understanding in my recently acquired experience.

They helped me register there and then online, telling me the details I needed to enter, including the last VAT amount I entered.

I quickly submitted the two months I had been missing, and that was that!…. almost! I still need to pay the balance of my actual VAT debt, which is about £70. Much relief, it could have been so much worse.

Imagine living in the time of Robin Hood, and no paying your taxes on time.. not nearly so much leniency and very much less conciliatory customer service one would expect :)
